As a child I heard the story of Adam and Eve, and as I walked home from class one day I had a conversation with God. I told Him I would never do what Eve had done. I would never hurt Him in that way. You know, I had no idea at all what Eve had done. It wasn’t until a half century later that, as I prayed to the Lord to search my heart, I sensed a ball much like a ball of yarn rise up inside me. What is this? I wondered. I heard a whisper that said, the “sin of Eve.” I was stunned; immediately I was back on the street where I was the day I spoke with Him. He began to show me that “sin of Eve” in me -- how I wanted to judge good and evil as I saw it, and how I wanted to rule my husband. He showed me many other not-so-nice things wrapped up in that yarn-like ball as He walked me through each one of them, cleansing my heart. It was as though I was back on the path of that innocent little girl so in love with Jesus, and He with me.
I tell this simple story to say that each time the Lord revealed truth to me He renewed my mind and I became more and more whole.
Prayer ministry works the same way. The Spirit of the Lord reveals lies that we believe about ourselves and others, and often some hidden lies we believe about Him. When the Lord speaks the truth to us, the lie causing the emotional pain is released, and healing begins. We have all been wounded as children – some of us more severely than others. Our belief system is set up when we are very young and often we do not know why we believe what we believe. We can be told that we are loved, but cannot seem to be convinced. We can want to love, but can’t seem to. We can stay intoxicated and not know why. Often this is because as a child we believed we had no worth. Only the Spirit of God can convince us experientially that we do have worth. How much more worth can we have than to be valued by God?
Prayer ministry has proven effective with people suffering from sexual abuse, marital issues, post-traumatic-stress syndrome, eating disorders, panic and anxiety disorders, homosexuality, pornography, substance abuse, all types of addictions, dissociative disorders and more.
Studies are linking more and more modern diseases to an epidemic of deadly emotions in our culture. The mind and body are linked. How you feel emotionally can determine how you feel physically. Emotions do not die. When you bury them, you are burying something that is alive. Some signs of pent-up emotions are perfectionism, a desire for control, self-doubt, self-deprecation, cynicism, criticism, promiscuity or a burst of emotions. They can become toxic and deadly if not processed with the Lord, in prayer.
People who come for prayer believe lies about themselves that often are placed there by an authority figure. They may have been told they are stupid and began to believe it, giving up trying for fear of reliving the pain of that moment. If a child is told something in anger it often becomes truth to them. Since it happens when they are so young, they believe it is true because it has always been there, and they don’t know why they believe it.
They may believe something that was true when they were young, but which is no longer true. If a child nearly drowns, for instance, they may fear water because it brings back the memory. They may have felt trapped and may still feel that way. The Spirit of God can bring truth and release them from their past.
Jesus Christ came to reconcile us to our Father, and to utterly destroy the works of the devil. He has done this for us. If we cannot receive the truth of it, there must be a lie standing in the way. The Lord wants to free us from it. God has thoughts and opinions about us, and if our thoughts and opinions do not line up with His, we may never know Him for who He is.
Prayer ministry so often reminds me of the woman at the well, and how the Lord spoke to her who was considered so lowly. You may want to read it in its entirety. I have skipped some verses… John 4:7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband; in that sadist thou truly.
The woman tells the truth – she does not attempt to hide it from Him or from herself. He commends her for her honesty. He then looks at her and reveals to her everything about her. He has all the facts. No one has all the facts about us, but He does, and He still loves us! After much more dialog, He says “the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such... God is a Spirit…”
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. (Jesus will tell us all things.) 28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, (Without shame she goes into the city and speaks to the men, and says:) 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
Would
you invite others to come and see a man who knew everything about you? If you
were accepted and healed you would. His Words by His Spirit can heal
woundedness. – 39
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the
woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
